Difference Between Crawl Budget and Index Budget

3 Min Read
0

When Google or any search engine discovers your website, it doesn’t automatically crawl and index every page all at once. Two important concepts help manage this process:

  • Crawl Budget – How many pages search engines can crawl on your site.
  • Index Budget – How many pages are eligible and prioritized to be indexed.

Although related, they are not the same. Let’s break it down.

What Is Crawl Budget?

Crawl Budget is the number of pages a search engine will crawl on your website within a certain time frame. Crawling means the search engine is visiting your pages to understand the content.

Key Points

  • Determined by search engine resources and your site’s performance.
  • Influenced by:
    • Server speed – Faster servers allow more crawling.
    • Page errors – Broken pages reduce crawl efficiency.
    • Duplicate content – Repeated pages may lower crawl priority.
  • Helps ensure important pages are discovered regularly.

Example

If Googlebot can crawl 1,000 pages a day on your site:

  • Important pages like your homepage and top product pages are crawled first.
  • Less important or outdated pages may be crawled less frequently.

What Is Index Budget?

Index Budget is the number of pages that a search engine decides to store in its index from the crawled pages. Indexing means the page is added to the search engine’s database and can appear in search results.

Key Points

  • Not all crawled pages are indexed.
  • Pages with:
    • Thin content.
    • Duplicate content.
    • Low value.
      may not be indexed.
  • Prioritizes pages that provide the most value to users.

Example

  • Your site has 1,000 pages crawled.
  • Only 800 high-quality, unique pages are added to Google’s index.
  • The remaining 200 pages may never appear in search results.
